Why is warranted physical punishment of kids bad?

I don't believe it's wrong to hit a child because of last resort punishment. It's wrong to hit them for first reaction and to make damage. It seems wrong to hit a child constantly. I think physical punishment should only be used after nothing else has worked, and should only be a smack or two.
